My Favorite Face Wash

Hi friends! Let me first start off by saying that when I originally read this recipe, I thought, “There’s no way that this is going to work well on my face”.

I’ve always had sensitive skin and have always been prone to outbreaks. I cannot even begin to tell you how many products I’ve tried in the past 10 years. Some products would work for a little while and then practically overnight, I’d wake up with bad blemishes. Then I would try another product, it would work, and then it wouldn’t. This was a vicious cycle for me. Not to mention, it got pretty expensive.

Since I’ve been replacing most of my household and personal products with natural/nontoxic/safe products, I knew I had to at least try to make a face wash. At this point, what would I have to lose, right? So, I made it. From the very first time I used it, I was impressed. It removed EVERY single ounce of my make-up, it left my face feeling incredibly clean, and my skin felt moisturized. The only thing left was to wait and see if my face would break out from using it.

I’m ESTATIC to report that I’ve been using this face wash 2x’s a day for the past 4 months, and have the clearest skin in my entire life. I never in a million years, would’ve thought that something so natural (and so easy to make) would be so effective. Not to mention, I’ll be saving a TON of money!

This is definitely my favorite recipe yet!

Here are the ingredients you’ll need:

  1. Melt honey, vegetable glycerin, & castile soap in a glass container (I put mine in a Pyrex glass bowl in the microwave).  Times will vary, but be sure to check every 15 seconds and stir to help the melting process (you’re just trying to melt the ingredients together, not cook them). Smile

2.   Add essential oils.

3.  Pour into a foaming soap dispenser.

4.   Be prepared to have clear & glowing skin. Smile

How I Use Essential Oils {A Typical Day}

Happy Wednesday! The other day, on my “Simply Essentials with Kristin” Facebook page (if you like learning about oils and would like to be added to the group page, let me know…I’d love to have you!) I featured pictures highlighting how I use my oils in a typical day. I thought it would be fun to share here too!

Wake up:

  • Coffee first with creamer (or I should say creamer with my coffee), then
  • Glass of ice water with either lemon essential oil or grapefruit essential oil (both of these oils contain limonene…which has AMAZING health benefits…go ahead and “Google” it) Smile

*Personally, I don’t recommend ingesting essential oils unless they are from Young Living. A lot of brands contain harmful additives (including formaldehyde). Young Living Essential Oils are completely pure and do not contain any harmful ingredients.

After my workout:

  • Shower using my Lavender Coconut Body Wash & Face Wash (the most amazing and effective face wash I’ve ever used).
  • Before heading out to a play date, I roll diluted Thieves essential oil on “S’s” feet. This helps keep her immune system up (this is something I do year round, but definitely more so during flu/cold season).

After our play date & lunch:

  • I clean the kitchen with Thieves Multi-Purpose Home Cleaner. This stuff is definitely one of my absolute favorite products. It can be used on all surfaces, it disinfects, and it’s safe (especially for when you have little hands “helping” clean). You can use this cleaner on mirrors, granite countertops, windows (no streaks), bathrooms, showers, tubs, toilets, tile, floors, carpet, highchairs, and baby toys!

  • I wash my hands about 1,000 times throughout the day using Thieves Foaming Hand Soap. It leaves my hands soft and moisturized (even with washing them so much)!

After dinner, it’s bath time for “S”:

  • Homemade Foaming Baby Bath Wash/Shampoo (contains “Peace & Calming” essential oil). “S” has extremely sensitive skin and is prone to severe eczema. I’m pretty sure I’ve used every single natural baby product out there. Some would work for a little while, but then her skin would get irritated (this is one of the main reasons I started using essential oils…I wanted to make my own pure products). Since starting with this soap (about 1 month ago), she hasn’t had skin issues!

  • “Magic Cream” is the perfect compliment to the Baby Wash. We use this after every bath. It contains lavender, frankincense, and tee tree essential oils. Not only is this a great baby cream, but it is a powerful night cream (lavender & frankincense are excellent for youthful skin support…wrinkles, be gone)!

Bedtime for “S”:

  • Diffuse “Peace & Calming” and Cedarwood essential oils. I discovered that “S” doesn’t sleep well when lavender is being diffused. I did some research and learned that some kids are affected by lavender the opposite way it’s supposed to work. Instead of relaxing her and helping her to sleep better, it makes her more alert. Cedarwood is great for promoting relaxation and sound sleep, so I gave that a try and it worked!

Shower for me:

  • Same Lavender Coconut Body Wash & Face Wash from this morning.
  • Face toner (contains lavender & tea tree oil)

  • After my toner dries, I add 1 drop of frankincense to my face moisturizer. When I wake up in the morning, my face is super soft and glowing. I LOVE Frankincense!

  • Brush my teeth. I add 1 drop of Orange vitality essential oil to my toothpaste. It is a great teeth whitener!

Then, it’s lights out & time to go bed!

I hope you enjoyed reading about the many ways I use my essential oils in a typical day. I do change up my routine and oils a bit, but these are pretty much my “staples”. There are so many more ways that I want to incorporate essential oils into my daily routine. As I continue discovering new ways, I will be sure to keep you posted. Smile

Random Monday Thoughts

Hi everyone! I can’t believe I haven’t blogged in over a week! Where does the time go?

Last week was one of those weeks where things were so busy! Then when I had some “down time” I was getting stuff done around the house (like cleaning, cooking, etc.). Side note: I really dislike cleaning, but since I’m a germaphobe, we clean a lot. This is what I use to clean EVERYTHING (kitchen, bathrooms, windows, mirrors, countertops, shower, floors, carpets, etc.). I love that it disinfects, but contains no harmful chemicals (which is great since little hands are always “helping” me clean). Smile

Oh, and it smells amazing!

I hosted a play group last week. 8 moms and babies were planning to attend. I made a ton of snacks and even put together a fun “make & take” of essential oil products (sleepy time bath salts & bug spray). I spent A LOT of time prepping.

Next thing I know, people started canceling left and right (like minutes before the play group started). One person ended showing up. I totally understand things come up, but having pretty much everyone cancel (and some not even canceling…just not showing up) was upsetting. Not to mention, this was the second time this has happened.

Back in the fall, I was asked to host a play group at my house. Since I was new to the group at the time, I was so excited to host my first play date. Here’s a picture of my first attempt at a fruit and cheese platter for my first unsuccessful play group:

Everyone but 2 moms canceled.  Both times, I put a lot of time, energy, and money into it. FYI: Prior to hosting play groups (and prior to having “S”), I never knew how much work hosting a play date could be.

I always try to look at the positives of every situation. So, my positive look on this situation is that I learned I will not be hosting any more play groups. I’ll be more than happy to attend them, but won’t be hosting. Sometimes, I guess I learn things the hard way.

This past week I hosted my very first “Essential Oils 101” online class. I had a lot of fun talking about all of the ways I use my oils. I cannot say enough about my love for Young Living essential oils. I’m so happy that I became a distributor. The amount of resources my company gives me are endless!

Over the weekend, I made “S” some baby wash/shampoo. It worked so well (better than most store bought brands I’ve tried). It literally took me 3 minutes to make! I’ll be posting the recipe here this week.

In other news, my workouts last week were great! I pretty much stuck to my planned workouts (with the exception of 1 cardio day). I woke up on Thursday morning and felt sore from Wednesday’s workout. I decided to take an extra rest day (plus, I wasn’t in the mood to workout) and it felt good!

Since last week’s workout plan was fun & easy to stick to, I am going to follow the same plan this week:

  • Monday – Full body weights w/cardio intervals
  • Tuesday – HIIT (20 minutes)
  • Wednesday – Full body weights w/cardio intervals
  • Thursday – LISS (45 minutes)
  • Friday – Full body weights w/cardio intervals
  • Saturday – 5K run
  • Sunday – Rest day

Now, I just have to get a little better with weekend eating. I do so well during the week then once the weekend hits, healthy eating goes out the window.

I hope everyone has a great start to the week!

Homemade Peppermint Lip Balm

Hi friends! Yesterday, I told you about how I made homemade peppermint lip balm using my essential oils. In case you missed it, you can check it out here.

I couldn’t wait to share this incredibly easy recipe with you! I’ve always been super picky when it comes to lip balm. I used to use Blistex Naturals, but they no longer sell it in stores. I had to start buying it in bulk online. Needless to say, it was no longer convenient. Plus, since I’ve been more aware about the ingredients I put on my body, it made sense to start making my own. Boy, am I glad I did! Not only is it super easy to make, but I can control the ingredients that go into making it (and it saves some money)! It’s a win-win situation!

The other great thing about this recipe is that the possibilities of flavors/scents are endless! I’m thinking of making a lavender lemon lip balm next.

Here are the ingredients you’ll need:

  • 3 tbsp. Beeswax (the little pellets are best because they melt pretty quickly)
  • 2 tbsp. cocoa butter
  • 2 tbsp. coconut oil
  • 10 drops of Young Living peppermint essential oil (like I said, you can really use any kind of Young Living essential oil scent)

1. Melt beeswax, coconut butter, coconut oil together using a metal double-broiler (I also read that you could place a metal bowl inside of a slow cooker if you don’t have a double-broiler…be careful as it is very easy to burn yourself when melting the wax & oils).

2. Once melted, add essential oils.

3. Using a dropper (or small funnel), pour into lip balm tubes. Let harden. Attach a cute label & enjoy!

As a lip balm addict, I can honestly tell you this lip balm is moisturizing and leaves your lips feeling so soft!

Friday Favorites

Happy Friday! Yesterday’s run was ah-mazing. It was one of those runs where I felt like I could have kept going. I’m not used to having runs like this recently, so it was a pleasant surprise. The weather was perfect too (low humidity, 65 degrees, and no wind).

Sticking with my Friday tradition, I want to share some of my favorite things with you.

  • Making my own products with my Young Living essential oils (FYI: If you’re interested in starting your own oil journey, Young Living is having an incredible sale on the Premier Starter kits for today only. If you’d like more information, let me know and I can help. Smile)

The face wash is one of my favorites. It leaves my (sensitive acne-prone) skin so soft, hydrated, and clean. It removes make-up perfectly, too! I use the Thieves Cleaner on everything (countertops, bathrooms, tub, shower, highchair, windows, mirrors, etc.). It disinfects and leaves everything squeaky clean. The body wash smells amazing, but I can’t wait to try some other summery scents (like coconut lime). The base of the face toner is apple cider vinegar (I swear this stuff makes a huge difference on my skin). The hand sanitizer doesn’t dry out my hands AND I can use it on “S” without fear of her having a bunch of chemicals on her skin. The best thing about making my own products is that I know exactly what goes into them and they are free of harmful chemicals.

  • Pasture Raised Eggs

We had been trying to find a local farm that offered pasture raised eggs. Unfortunately, there weren’t any that were close to us. A friend of my husband was randomly telling him that his hens are laying so many eggs that his family can’t eat them all. So now, every week, we pay him for a dozen of eggs. It’s neat seeing how very different all of the eggs are. It also feels good knowing that the eggs we’re consuming are coming from hens that are free roaming. Plus, the eggs taste so good!

  • Happy Tot Organics

love my veggiespicture source

There are so many things I love about these veggie pouches. “S” likes these A LOT. In fact, when she isn’t in the mood for her regular meals (like times of teething or times when she doesn’t like certain textures <—this happens a lot lately), she’ll always eat these. I feel good knowing she’s getting the proper nutrients she needs (along with a full serving of veggies).

  • BOB Revolution SE Jogging Stroller

jogging strollerpicture source

This stroller has been nothing short of amazing for me. It glides so smoothly (like a hot knife through butter). I also have the BOB Motion for every day use. I can definitely notice a major difference with how well the Revolution maneuvers. The only negative I have for it, is that it is very bulky regarding storage (but aren’t most jogging strollers?). It definitely takes up a lot of room.

There you have my “Friday Favorites”. Thanks for reading! Have a wonderful Friday & a great weekend!

Natural Bug Spray

Hi friends! I recently made a new “recipe” for natural bug spray. With all of the chemicals in traditional bug spray, I didn’t want to put it on anyone in my family. I feel completely safe using Young Living essential oils on my family, so I used them to make my own bug spray. Here’s the recipe I used:

  • 2 oz. glass spray bottle
  • 1 oz. witch hazel
  • 5 drops of Thieves essential oil
  • 5 drops of Purification essential oil
  • 5 drops of Lavender essential oil
  • 5 drops of Peppermint essential oil
  • Fill the rest of the bottle with water

Please remember that when you’re using essential oils, it’s extremely important to dilute them when using them on young children.  Here’s a helpful dilution chart (I don’t have a photo source because a friend of mine gave it to me).

Essential oils sometimes have a bad reputation because people use them incorrectly. When used incorrectly, they can be harmful. So, please do your research, and as always, check with your doctor before using them. Also, remember that what works for my family, may not work for yours (and that’s okay, we’re all doing what’s best for our loved ones) Smile

Have a great day!

How My Essential Oils Journey Began

Happy Hump Day everyone! I hope you’re having a nice week. I thought I’d share with you how I got started with essential oils. I’ve been part of an online moms group since my daughter was born. We all have kids that were born the same month and year. It is made up of women all over the world (it’s really an incredible & helpful group). Anyway, someone mentioned that they noticed their baby was sleeping better when they diffused lavender in her room. I was intrigued because my little one has never been a great sleeper (better sleep? sign me up!).  However, I’m extremely particular when it comes to using nontoxic & natural products.

At the time, I knew absolutely nothing about essential oils. So, I basically started researching, and researching, and researching. Not only did I research essential oils, but companies that are involved with making them. Like I said, I’m very particular (some may even call it obsessive…I’m okay with that). During my research, I discovered that there are many companies/brands out there that claim their oils are “pure” and “safe”, when in fact, they are mostly made up of synthetic ingredients (the exact same thing I’m trying to avoid).

After 8 months of researching every possible aspect of essential oils, I chose to purchase my essential oils from Young Living. I was so impressed with their extremely stringent “Seed to Seal” process. From planting the seeds, to cultivating, to distilling, to testing, and finally to sealing the finalized product, Young Living produces the highest quality oils.

why i chose young living

Did you know that you can even visit their farms to see firsthand how the oils are produced?!?!?! Here is a picture of Young Living’s Whispering Springs Farm in Utah.

When I decided to purchase my oils, I had a few oils in mind (4 oils to be exact). The cost for the 4 that I selected was over $100. Since I never used essential oils before, I also needed to buy a diffuser. This would’ve brought my total to $200+. I still wanted the oils, but I couldn’t see spending that much on just 4 bottles and a diffuser. It was then that I discovered the Premium Starter Kit. Not only did it come with these (most used) oils:

    • Lavender
    • Peppermint Vitality™
    • Lemon Vitality™
    • Copaiba Vitality™
    • Frankincense
    • Thieves® Vitality™
    • Purification®
    • R.C.™
    • DiGize™ Vitality™
    • PanAway®

but it also came with a FREE bottle of Stress Away™ and a diffuser!!!!! The kit also came with samples, a roller fitment (so you can roll some of the oils directly from the bottle onto your skin), 2 of their drink samples, a product guide, an essential oils magazine, and more! All of this was just $160. Aside from the essential oils purity (since you already know I love that), I also like how the company offers discounts and rewards points (these allow you to get FREE products).  I definitely couldn’t pass this up, so I went ahead and purchased the kit.

When I bought the kit, I was adamant about not wanting to sign up to be a distributor, nor did I want to make any kind of commitment to future purchases (after all, this was my first time using essential oils and I didn’t even know if they’d be a good fit for me). During checkout, I was confused because it gives you the option to “become a member”.  I had to contact someone to verify that becoming a member didn’t hold any future obligations (turns out, all that it means is that you’ll pay wholesale prices if you sign up to be a member, nothing more, nothing less). Aside from the essential oils purity (since you already know I love that), I also like how the company offers discounts and rewards points (these allow you to get FREE products).

I received my kit and fell in love. I began finding myself telling everyone I knew about my new found love for essential oils. Last month, I decided that since I love sharing this information so much, I should become a distributor. Why not share what I love?

Now, I’m continuing my research and finding even more ways to use essential oils. I’m still using all of the original oils from the kit, too! They last a long time.

I’ve made some incredible products using my oils and other natural ingredients.

It feels reassuring knowing that the products my family uses are nontoxic and safe. Since I love sharing this information, this is the page where I’ll be sharing recipes for all kinds of products.
